One of the most common questions I get once I mention that I’m a real mermaid is usually

followed by, “Do you have any mermaid powers?” Ok, I’ll be honest, it’s usually young kids

asking that question while I’m swimming in a mermaid tail, which makes it funny and

adorable to adults looking on.

I usually answer honestly in return. “Yes, I do have mermaid powers. I can hear the ocean talk

to me and I can talk to her animals. I also help people see how beautiful the world is and how

beautiful they are too!”

Believing is the first step to understanding your intuitive gifts. I know for a fact that I can communicate with ocean animals and they understand me. I’ve had

experiences of dancing with honu (green sea turtles), getting swimming

lessons from naia (Hawaiian spinner dolphins), and actually calling animals

around boats that I’ve spent time on. I honestly can’t explain it. It’s like a

spidey sense for ocean animals. I know where they’re at, and I know

how to talk to them.

When I worked in Alaska as a biologist, I got the nickname whale whisperer on most of the boats I worked on. My eerie behavior before the whales would show up and often creep out members of the crew. I would be sitting and staring off into space with a glazed over look in my eye. I remember telling one deckhand, “I need you to wake me up around 3pm tomorrow when the orcas come.” On that particular boat I was working the evening shift so I would normally wake up around 5pm to prepare for my shift.

The deckhand looked at me and said, “There are no orcas here. It’s the wrong season for them.” I just shook my head and said, “Just wake me up when they get here.”

Sure enough at 3pm the next day I got a very hesitant knock on my door as

the deckhand came in to wake me up for the orcas that had just arrived.

Once that was done, he quietly asked me how I knew they were around. I

described that I feel them and I can call them to the area. If they choose

to come, they will. This happened with Dall’s porpoises, sperm whales, and

humpback whales.

So why am I sharing this with you? It’s not to brag about how amazingly odd

I am. It’s actually to pose the question, if you were to not limit your beliefs

how could you expand the use of your gifts? Have you boxed yourself in and

limited your purpose based on your current understanding of how Spirit

and the Universe works with us?

Alaska had offered my first major spiritual awakening and firmly believed I would have to give up marine biology, which was my passion, to pursue spiritual work. In my limited perception I had been chosen to be a medium and at the time I didn’t believe the two would blend. I sat and prayed on that boat and let God know that if He needed me to give up science to work with Spirit, I would. The joke was on me.

When I began to accept that my passion for the ocean would always be a part of my purpose, the spiritual aspects surrounding it unfolded. I had accepted that I was a real life mermaid. My purpose is to teach people about caring for the physical ocean and about their inner ocean. I enjoy empowering and building

people to go out and do good in their community and for their environment. I

love inspiring people to see the beauty of the world around them and showing them just how undeniably linked we are. That is where Spirit and Passion blend for me. I can use my knowledge of the physical to help interpret the spiritual symbolism. I can also use Spirit to connect more to the Physical.

So if you’re new on your journey and you’re trying to piece together how to work with Spirit, think about what already fills your with Joy. What gets you out of bed in the morning? What fills your heart space with just over bounding happiness? How does Spirit use that to make the world a better place? Once you cast off the limits, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
